How do you know your operator will take good care of your machine and treat it responsibly? How do you know that he will look under the helmet every day before he turns on the ignition? The operator can give you fast and valuable first-hand information – if he senses something is wrong or if something happens. A good and stable operator is hard to find; protect him by only letting him use machines he is trained to handle.
Restricting machine access to properly trained operators is part of running a safe fleet. Managers remain in control of what’s happening at the work site – even from a distance.
One way to make sure your machine is in good shape is to perform daily pre-checks as a standard routine. Pre-checks are meant for his safety as well as to take care of your large investment. Also, having pre-check digital logs is a helpful, convincing argument when selling the machine.

A first-hand damage report, pictures and any additional information from the operator can make the difference between a short break and a longer interruption of work progress. After an incident occurs, an immediate report and chat with the service department reduces downtime and makes a first-time fix more likely.
Earlier this year, Committee For European Construction Equipment (CECE) released a report titled “Digitalizing the Construction Sector.” It states: “…digitalization means improved communication, higher efficiency in managing construction processes, better communication between machines, but also higher sustainability and improved safety thanks to a better use of resources that is made possible by the use of new technologies.”
CECE’s report states that an indirect and quite important effect of embracing new digital solutions is an increased level of safety, which makes good reason. In 2018, Trackunit completed a year-long study on fleet safety. The results significantly supported the theory that the safest fleets are digitalized fleets: The most digitized companies in construction have a culture that embraces increased digitalisation, they enjoy a 10% better financial performance and they are 25% better at servicing their machines. This is really a win-win.

The updated ANSI A92 suite of design, safe use and training standards for aerial work platforms were published in the US on December 10, 2018, with an effective date of December 2019. The new standards place a significant emphasis on the responsibilities for developing control measures and communication abilities with all stakeholders; carry out inspections and repairs as required and last, but not least, prevent unauthorized use of equipment. This updated set of standards show that safety is taken very seriously, and it starts with the first person in line – the operator
